Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area. This unit is the standard used by contractors, suppliers, and shingle manufacturers for ordering and estimating materials.

How do I calculate roofing squares from square footage?

Divide your total sloped roof area (in square feet) by 100. For example, 2,200 sq ft ÷ 100 = 22 squares. Always measure the sloped surface area, not the floor footprint — pitch increases the surface area.

Should I measure squares from the footprint or the actual roof?

Always measure from the actual sloped roof surface, not the floor footprint. A 4/12 pitched roof over a 2,000 sq ft footprint has approximately 2,108 sq ft of sloped surface (2,000 × 1.054 pitch factor), not 2,000.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

For standard 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles, 3 bundles = 1 square. Order extra for waste: typically 10% for simple roofs, 15% for standard, 20–25% for complex roofs with many valleys or cut angles.
